Bart Simpson
But days after returning home, Vinnie complained that his arm was hurting and the temporary image soon began to redden and blister. His mother, Hayley Shipway, 24, said a red ring appeared around the Bart outline. She took him to the doctors who gave him a steroid cream. She said, “The next morning it was much worse, so I took him back to the doctors and as soon as I lifted up his sleeve and showed the nurse, her face just dropped. It was inflamed and sore, and looked like the Bart Simpson had been scratched into his skin with a pin.” Mrs Shipway, from Southmead, Bristol, who has let Vinnie have stick-on tattoos before, said he now keeps asking her to take the scar off. She added: ‘We have been told that the scarring in the shape of Bart Simpson may be permanent because he had such a bad reaction. “I just feel so guilty. People have said it’s not our fault, but we let him have it done.”
Tattoo
Eric Taylor of OCI radio said, “I have done two programmes on this problem with Strider, who runs the Midnight Express Tattoo studio in Calpe. We have warned people to watch out for these NON - LEGAL tattooists working on the beach in Benidorm. Midnight Express would never do a Henna Tattoo. These tattoos are not done by legal tattoo studios but by illegal traders and people on the beaches.” One bona fide company representative said, “It may be the so-called artists are buying their supplies in good faith, but the suppliers are being unscrupulous. Then again, it may be that the artist does not care because the punters have gone home before the reaction sets in. The main fault, in my opinion, lies with local Councils not doing their job and checking that these people are using legal products or are correctly licensed; if not, shut them down.”
Henna
The term henna tattoo is inaccurate, because tattoos are defined as permanent surgical insertion of pigments underneath the skin, as opposed to pigments resting on the surface. Likely due to the desire for a “tattoo-black” appearance, many people have started adding the synthetic dye PPD to henna to give it a black colour. PPD is extremely harmful to the skin and can cause severe allergic reactions resulting in permanent injury or even, in the worst case, death. A genuine henna tattoo should fade within 10 days and the ink is usually a red- brown colour. But the ink used on Vinnie’s skin was black, suggesting it contained the hair dye chemical paraphenylenediamine or PPD. Only last week, the Benidorm Council pledged to clear up the menace of illegal street operators such as this. Despite their strong words, apathy amongst the Council members seems to be the rule. However it does beg the question, why on earth did the boys mother allow her 3 year old child to have a henna tattoo in the first place?
